Greek Myths: The Titian War

By Toby Kelsall

In the beginning there was only chaos. Gaea the earth goddess created Uranus the god of the sky. They married and gave birth to the 12 Titians, the Cyclops and the Hekatonkheires. Uranus was filled with disgust and fear of his children because he feared that he would be overthrown by them. So he sent them to Tartarus the world in Gaea where bad creatures go. Gaea loved all her children, so she unleashed her most ambitious child Kronos to overthrow his father.

After overthrowing his father, Kronos became the lord of the universe, but he only let free the other Titans, not the Cyclops and the Hekatonkheires. They were still in Tartarus so for that Gaea cursed Kronos saying, “As you overthrew your father your son will overthrow you!”

So when a Titan called Rhea gave birth to the first gods, Kronos ate them all except Zeus because Rhea had him sent to the island of Crete where Nymphs fed him ambrosia and nectar until he was old enough to fight Kronos.

Gaea told Zeus that his siblings were inside Kronos ́ belly, so he made a special potion to make him throw up his siblings. One night he went disguised as a waiter and poured the potion in the goblet with a mix of wine. As Kronos drank the wine he started to throw up his siblings (Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter and Hestia). The battle of the Titians began but the gods needed help, so Gaea told Zeus go to Tartarus and free the Hekatonkheires and Cyclops. When he got there, he had to battle Kampe the prisoner ́s guard and in the end Zeus won.

Zeus freed the cyclops and Hekatonkheires and for that the Cyclops made powerful weapon’s such as Zeus’ Lightning Bolt, Poseidon’s Trident and Hades ́ helm of invisibility. The Hekatonkheires helped with the battle of the Titians by attacking them with mountains and swords. The Olympian’s won the war and sent the Titians to Tartarus.

The gods now ruled in Mount Olympus.

5th Grade Reading Olympics

BY: Toby Kelsall

Hello everybody! The WES Buzz journalist, Toby interviewed Mrs.Dahlstrom, our school librarian about our 5th grade Reading Olympics program at WES. Fourth graders, you will have a chance to do this next year, but here is some info now!

How long has WES had Reading Olympics? Reading Olympics started in Delaware County 12 years ago. The surrounding counties had it for much longer. WES was the first elementary school in Radnor to have a team, 11 years ago.  Since that time, many WES teachers have been volunteer coaches: Ms. B, Mrs. Burhop, Mrs. Coppola, Mrs. Dahlstrom, Mrs. Goldberg and Mrs. Shuda.

Is Reading Olympics hard? No. The only thing you must do is READ!  and once a month you have a meeting at 8:00 am to talk about the books.

How do I get started with Reading Olympics?  You fill out an application and return it to Mrs. Dahlstrom.  It costs $30 to join, but scholarships are available.

How many books do I have to read? Generally, there are 45 books on the reading list. This year there are 43 books on the reading list. Students who join reading Olympics agree to read at least five books from the list during the year. There have been years when some WES students read ALL the books.

What if I want to be with my friend, will you put me with them?  Teams are formed by asking each participant to list two friends that they would like to be on the same team with.  Students generally are on the same team with at least one of their friends.  What a great opportunity to get to know some other fifth graders!

Do I have to go to every single event?  There are Reading Olympic team meetings every month.  We start the meeting with great snacks provided by parents.  Then we play a fun game.  After the game, we talk about favorite books and recommend books to other kids.  While you don’t have to attend every event, you will want to because they are really fun and it is a great opportunity to meet new kids.

Are there stages for the club and the competition? In the beginning, students read any book from the list.  After we form teams, students need to be more strategic with what they read so that each team has read every book on the list at least once.

What happens when you are at a competition?  At the competition, each team will be be asked 20 questions in three different rounds.  Each team gets a total of 50 of more points, each team will get a blue ribbon.  If the score is 40-49 points, they get a red ribbon.  If they score 30-39 points, they will get a white ribbon.  The real prize is participating in Reading Olympics comes from reading some great literature that you might not have discovered without the list.

I Joined reading Olympics because I like reading books my favorite book is Capture the Flag because I like adventure and fiction. I totally recommend reading Olympics If you love reading

Update: WES Reading Olympics Returns Victorious

By Mackenzie Rose

The WES Reading Olympic teams competed at Northley Middle School in Aston, PA.  Team Tropical Blue did a great job.  The Maroon team came in 2nd place with 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie. My team, Cardinal Red, came in 1st place with 3 wins, 0 losses, and 0 ties.

There were 3 rounds and every time the announcements came on to announce the news for the Olympics, the announcer said a joke. For example, she said, “Where do books go when they are scared?……… Under their covers!”

The Olympics were AMAZING and I will never forget them. The only bad thing was that I didn’t get home until 8:37.  Even though it ended at 8:00, it was a great experience and I wish GOOD LUCK to any future Olympians.

Editor’s Note:  When you are in fifth grade, watch for the notice to join Reading Olympics.  The club meets and has a lot of fun.bfg

Reading Olympics at WES

By Mackenzie Rose

CALLING ALL FIFTH GRADERS!

DO YOU LIKE TO READ? IF SO, READING OLYMPICS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!

The meetings are Monday before school.  The sign up is in September and the first meeting is later in the fall.   Mrs. Dahlstrom in the library can give you all the details any time.

There is a list of 45 books.  Everyone must read at least 5 books.  There are three teams, each with two captains.  When practicing for the competition, the captains have the responsibility of nominating someone to answer a question.

Every year there is a competition in early April, this year it is April 1-3.  Almost 200 schools participate every year in a county-wide competition.

This year the club at WES has 31 kids participating. In the first group, Gabby & Amelia are the team captains of the TROPICAL BLUE team. Eeshan & Vivian are the team captains of the RED team. And last but not least, Tate & Emily are the team captains for the MAROON team.

I hope that this article gets you excited about reading and gives you the courage to apply to Reading Olympics when you are old enough.

Editor’s Note:  In 2016, Radnor hosted Reading Olympics, check out the story about that here

Author Candace Fleming Comes to WES

By Danby Morrison

The author we’ve been hearing about for days, the special author who came to the assembly for this year’s 2018-19 author assembly, the author who brought ‘Strongheart’ back to society — CANDACE FLEMING!!!

Candace Fleming is the author of a lot of people’s favorite recent book that we shared and read: Ben Franklin’s in my Bathroom, a fun, historical, and humorous book about two kids, Nolin and Olive Stanberry who get a mysterious gadget-thing and it magically brings back Benjamin Franklin from the 1700s.

Anyway, before the big author assembly, where all 600 students came in the Little Theater and saw Candace Fleming, a group of lucky 4th and 5th grade students got to have lunch with Candace Fleming inside the conference room, inside the library!

Lunch was Thursday, January 24, 2019.    She told us she is planning to write a book about Elvis Presley.

My favorite of the two books I read by Candace Fleming is Strongheart: Wonderdog of The Silverscreen.  Many of you remember both at the lunch and at the assembly, that Candace Fleming told us about a book she once read by the fireplace with her dog, Oxford a.k.a Obnoxford (lol), at her side.  The book was called Rin Tin Tin, a biography about the most famous original Hollywood actor dog by Susan Orlean. One of the most interesting facts about the book Rin Tin Tin is that, for maybe a paragraph or two, Susan Orlean explained that Rin Tin Tin was, in fact, not the first Hollywood-famous dog.  Fleming explained that Susan Orlean mentioned in her book about a dog named Strongheart, the actual first dog that became an actor in the late 1920s and was born right outside of Berlin, Germany.

So, basically, this man named Larry Tremble was looking for the perfect dog to star in his movie The Silent Call, to try something different for his movies, he looked all over the world just to find the perfect dog, but none of them seemed right, then, he finally went to a place near Berlin, Germany.  Now, Larry Tremble wanted a cool, actor-dog name, not like Strongheart’s original name, Edsel, so Larry thought to himself:  How about Strongheart?

Now keep in mind, if you were reading Strongheart in the library with Mrs. Dahlstrom, you’d know that Edsel was raised at a police dog station, so when Larry first met him, he was a little rough around the edges.  He barked a lot and growled sometimes.  But Larry trained him to become a nice, loyal dog, and it worked!

Book Review: The Menagerie Series

By Julia Silverman

The Menagerie is a great book series for people that like mythical animals and fantasy books. It follows Logan and Zoe through Xanadu, Wyoming, as they try to save the Menagerie. The Menagerie is a hidden place full of magical animals.

The first book is called The Menagerie. In this book, Logan and Zoe need to find six escaped griffin cubs, or the Menagerie will be shut down.

The second book is Dragon on Trial. The Menagerie’s golden goose is missing, and Logan and Zoe must investigate to find out what happened.

The last book is named Krakens and Lies. Logan and Zoe must work together to stop the Menagerie and its creatures from being exposed.

I definitely recommend these books. They are exciting and funny. The books are by Tui and Kari Sutherland. Tui Sutherland is also the author of the Wings of Fire series. All the books can be found at the WES library.

Author Up Close: Zhang Meets Jen Calonita

By Leah Zhang

There was a book fair (that’s what my mom and dad call it) where I met Jen Calonita, an author who writes one of my favorite book series, Fairy Tale Reform School.

I was soooo excited in my Dad’s car going to Children’s Book World in Haverford to meet Jen Calonita!!!

Mrs. Dahlstrom, our amazing WES librarian, had called my Dad to be sure we knew it was happening.

“Oh!!! We’re finally here!!!,” I thought when we arrived.

When I entered with my Dad, I saw a lot of books. Jen Calonita greeted Dad and me. She has blonde hair, brown eyes and is very nice. She showed me how to make a wand. She started to make one herself, too. Soon, more people came in.

When I had just finished my wand, my dad decided to buy me a book.

Jen Calonita said that she has written the fifth book in the Fairy Tale series but it won’t come out until March. But she did show us the cover. It’s called Wishes. There was also another book called Misfits, and it was on the shelf so we got that one.

I did get it autographed (and her email for questions).

Jen Calonita said that Misfits was the first book to a new series, and she wrote this book because she said, “Have you ever wondered what goes on the other side of the Fairy Tale Reform School?” So, this is called Royal Academy Rebels.

(I am very sorry if you don’t understand a word I am saying right now, so you should go and read the book!!!)

Jen Calonita handed a sheet of tests and my favorite one was the test of where you would fit; the Royal Academy Rebels or the Fairy Tale Reform School. I got the Fairy Tale Reform school.

My dad got a book, and then we said goodbye and went back home.
