The Devil’s Advocate
By Ben Richmond
It is well known that everyone loves recess but there is a dark side! Recess can keep you from learning.
Instead of playing outside, I know in your hearts you would rather do times tables and whatnot. Think of how easy it could be getting a job writing a math textbook when you know all of the stuff! Recess can rot your brains from running around and playing with balls. Too much fresh air may be dangerous? Are there any studies to confirm this? Think of all the time we waste lining up when we could be doing 4-paragraph essays. The teachers even agreed with me because it takes forever to line up. Why run around wasting valuable time when you could avoid bad scores on your spelling quizzes! During recess sports, it is funny when one team wins and then they have to argue with the other team about why they should win. Less recess would mean less sports arguments! Think of all of the extra time you could be learning! I mean seriously, wouldn’t you rather play a Kahoot or a learning game then take the whole recess choosing teams for a soccer game?
Recess equipment is expensive. It was expensive to fund the new playground when it could have been spent on different learning activities. Also, sometimes (not at WES I think) there is bullying at recess. Less recess could mean that a child is not bullied on the playground. Recess could also be dangerous. Kids could get minor to major injuries on the playground/at recess. We don’t want our school to lose money if a parent sues the district for a major injury at recess. Recess can be very cold during Winter. Some kids don’t have or forget a jacket when it’s cold and they could get really cold. Test scores are important. Less time at recess could improve scores. Students could get exposed to animals (rarely). Kids and parents always complain about not having enogh time to eat lunch. That could affect growth issues and nutrition. There also is a risk of getting sunburnt or a tick bite! Did anybody out there think of all this? I bet no. Let’s hear what you think: take my survey and let’s find out.
P.S I do think recess should happen, but I get bored sometimes.
