News You Can Use

Cool Facebook INFO

BY:Ben Rickmond

Hello WES! We are going to do a spotlight on Facebook, the popular social media company.

Facebook was made by a group of friends at Harvard in 2004. Andrew McCollumMark ZuckerbergDustin MoskovitzChris HughesEduardo Saverin. Mark Zuckerberg made a website called “Facemash.” This website allowed users to objectify fellow students by comparing photos of their faces and selecting who they deemed as the most popular. Mark got in huge trouble from the college admin and barely escaped expulsion from Harvard. He and his buddies got together and started planning for what would become… Facebook.

So, what does Facebook do anyway? Well, on Facebook you can post photos, start chats, connect with people and get followers. Businesses use Facebook to advertise and show products on the web. Facebook IS engineered to be addictive. Our WES BUZZ leader (click here for more info) said a friend of hers in Silicon Valley, (click Here) that was one of the first Facebook employees said they were working to make Facebook an app where users “could not put it down.”

Facebook does have a bad reputation for cyberbullying and inappropriate content. You do have to be 13 and have a valid e-mail address. Common sense media says that the suggested age is 15 yrs. Facebook is a very good way to connect, but the ads will target you and there is questionable content. This company is a good example of a small idea that can turn into something huge!
